During the early years of the 20th century, Wensleydale entrepreneur Kit Calvert had been experimenting with generating his own electricity on the farm using water from a nearby beck and a home made waterwheel. At Hoggarths farm he installed a turbine and dynamo on the site of Little Moor lead mine, using the pipework and water supply system that had driven a hydraulic pumping engine up until the middle of the 19th century. The farm continued to use this power supply until the 1960s when mains electricity was laid on.
