Description

A ridgeway route running north east from Windegg in Arkengarthdale to Gayles (Grid ref: NZ123074) beyond the National Park. Moresdale Road may have an ancient origin, but from Medieval times it is known to have been used as a saltway along which salt from the Durham coast was carried into the northern dales. Lead from mines in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale went the other way up until the 19th century. Source: Wright, Geoffrey N (1985) Roads and Trackways of the Yorkshire Dales.
