Description
The name of this natural spring in the middle of Hebden derives from Old Norse. ‘Thurs’ translates as ‘a giant’ and ‘kelda’ means spring. Thurs or Thor was an important Scandinavian god and this spring may have had some sort of holy association from the days when Hebden may have formed part of a large Anglo-Scandinavian estate centred at Burnsall.
